Our Genetic Program

Breeding for Optimal Reproduction, Growth & Profits

Bull Heifer Mama Angus with Calf Genes

The objective of our beef improvement program is to produce elite, practical breeding animals and boost profitability by optimizing reproduction and growth functions within a beef herd.

Data Drove the Direction
An analysis of all available Angus data using a profit function that prioritized reproduction, feed conversion, and carcass quality (an emphasis on the first two) revealed:

  • The two most heavily used Angus bulls were producing the best and worst cattle in the breed
  • Two southern IL farmers using a different bull could end up with a $260 profit difference — strictly due to genetics.

Improvement Generation to Generation
The goal of our purebred Angus herd is improvement with each generation having increased carcass muscle with a reduction in feed utilization for the carcass produced than the previous one. Animals must support sustainability through a docile response to handling as well as a desire to thrive across a variety of production environments and challenges.

Proven Through Tracking
To deliver against our objective, we diligently measure traits of our animals in both fescue-based grazing and bed-packed barn environments. This ensures improvement in a herd's production capacity can be confidently achieved across a broad range of commercial environments. We measure with strict discipline all key traits that are critical to sustain reproduction, optimal growth, quality carcass performance, and a unique and enjoyable eating experience for the consumer.
